Climate Indices for Impacts Assessment is a technical pilot project of NCPP designed to spur development of a framework for translational information and to explore how components including NCPP, the USGS Derivatives Portal, and data collections at Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) can interact. Translational information describes the steps used to generate  data products, i.e. provenance of the data. It may also include expert guidance on the use or suitability of data as well as both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of  data and methods. This pilot project will foster building a new expertise and capacity for the development of translational information. This involves developing a framework to support templates whose content can be filled in by climate experts. The pilot emphasizes the role of standards, in both data and metadata, to create a national and international capability to deliver local and regional climate information that may derive from multiple sources and services.

This pilot project will contribute to both a translational information framework and will also develop specific content related to the goal of obtaining climate indices for impacts assessment. The calculation of climate indices will be based on web services provided by USGS.
