Understanding Climate Information

The mission of the National Climate Predictions and Projections (NCPP) Platform is to advance the community-coordinated provision of regional and local knowledge about the evolving climate and to accelerate its use in adaptation planning and decision making. NCPP activities are focused on linking existing capabilities and working to fill gaps. NCPP’s target customer is the “climate interpreter,” as described in the 2012 National Academy of Science Report, A National Strategy for Advancing Climate Modeling. Implementation is achieved through focused projects, connected together in evaluation workshops.  The evaluation workshops are focused on developing application-driven protocols for evaluation of localized climate predictions and projections.  The infrastructure and protocols from one workshop are used in the next, thereby, developing capacity.  The first NCPP workshop (August 2013) is focused on evaluation of downscaled climate projections for the United States.

The implementation supports the NCPP strategic goals of

  • Facilitating the development of application-oriented communities
  • Becoming an authoritative source for practices and standards, recommendations and guidance for use of localized climate predictions and projections
  • Developing a flexible and extensible evaluation platform that offers important performance metrics on methods, data and tools.
