Notes on the Table
The "Code and ESMF Version" column of the spreadsheet is an important indicator of interoperability. After ESMF v5.2.0r, most of the ESMF interfaces are guaranteed to be backward compatible. ESMF components that can be built with ESMF v5.2.0r and later are much less likely to have coupling issues that arise from changes to the ESMF interfaces between versions.
Several groups have developed software conventions that increase the level of interoperability that ESMF provides. These conventions include NASA's Modeling Analysis and Prediction Layer (MAPL) and the National Unified Operational Prediction Capability (NUOPC) Layer, developed by a NOAA-Navy led consortium and distributed with ESMF. If the main reason you are using ESMF is for component interoperability, use of the NUOPC or similar conventions is advised.
